The Cross

Jesus Christ was made a curse for us.

My reading brought me to Deuteronomy 28:15-68, about the curses; and I didn't like it.

As I read, it became darker, heavier; it was oppressive, it was horrible.  I was thinking, "I want to get out of here fast," when a voice spoke in my mind,

"JESUS CHRIST WAS MADE A CURSE FOR US."

For some time I have been asking the Lord to take me deeper into understanding the cost and the meaning of the Cross.  Often I have quoted the words from Galatians 3:13-14 -- Jesus Christ was made a curse for us.

Did I speak the words rather lightly, almost casually?

Glad, of course, that it was true but failing overwhelming gratitude because my understanding was so shallow.  But now I realized, deeply realized, with a heavy, heavy knowing that the message of GOOD FRIDAY can be found in Deuteronomy chapter 28.

Oh, spotless Lamb.  Oh, heinous curse.

           Oh, Calvary, dark Calvary!

This Deuteronomy section reveals the ugly aspects and insanity of the deceitful, desperately wicked hearts of fallen humans when all our masks are off and we face grim reality.  All of this He became for us, that Sinless One Who utterly sacrificed Himself, Who became a curse, Whose life was liberated through death to become our life.

Because our precious Saviour became a curse for us, we have received the Blessing of Abraham, the fulfillment of the promise of the restoration of the Holy Spirit to the human spirit.  In becoming a curse for us, He reversed the effects of the curse and restored to us all that was lost in fallen Adam.  I'm glad; I'm thankful; but I know that I do not even begin to give to God the gratitude I owe.

I long to go deeper and deeper into the Cross of Jesus until my constant experience truly is:

             my heart an altar

            and His love the flame.

                              With love and prayers,
