Have you ever had a section of Scripture seem commonplace and almost boring because you have read it so often? I reluctantly confess that my thoughts were inclined to wander down that dangerous path as I came to yet another portion which was sooooooo familiar. Then the Lord asked me about my wedding ring. He asked if familiarity had bred contempt for it and if I was bored with it because I'd had it so long. Of course not! My wedding ring is something I treasure because of all it represents of promise, faithfulness, love, commitment and security. I would never brush it aside just because it is familiar; in fact, its very familiarity makes it dearer.
How often do we neglect or read carelessly the Word of God just because it is familiar?
Another thought came .....
Do we not know that this eternal, God-breathed Word is like a wedding ring for us? This is where our heavenly Bridegroom is revealed. This is where His lovely characteristics are imparted to adorn His Bride. This is where we learn of the privileges, responsibilities and precious treasures which are bestowed on the Bride. This is where we learn of all the planning, preparation, tremendous cost and joyous anticipation of the wedding.
How ignorant, how foolhardy, how unloving it is for us to disparage or ignore our spiritual wedding ring and insult our glorious Bridegroom by refusing to deepen our knowledge of Him.
That sooooooo familiar passage took on fresh beauty that morning as I dug like an archeologist on an ancient site and probed the tiny details God had worked out in individual lives; and I saw it all with fresh excitement as part of His tremendous plan because God so loved the world.
So, as I open the pages of the Holy Book, I am polishing my wedding ring and seeing more clearly how all things from eternity to eternity are working toward that joy scene when our victorious Bridegroom will claim His Bride and all creation will exult in His grand Redemption.
With love and prayers,
