Rainbow

It was rather a long drive, on that particular day it seemed long and tedious. But suddenly our weariness was changed to exhilaration. We were entranced by a rainbow as it arched against the changing sky in magnificent glory.

(I gladly admit that I'm nutty about rainbows.)

This time was unusual because instead of lingering briefly, the rainbow was visible to us for several miles as we travelled homeward. For a little while we saw a double rainbow. What a bonus! It was hard to keep our eyes on the road. It felt like we were wrapped in all the colours of God's love.

My contemplation took me back to Noah as he emerged from the ark. The years of horrifying wickedness were past, neighbours and acquaintances were all gone, the sounds of work and play were silenced.

Except for his family and the animals on board, he stepped into a strange, new world, a world empty of human and animal life. So much stretched before him in every direction and it was awesome. I tried to get inside his head. How did he feel?

Terrified? Lonely? Inadequate? Challenged? Grateful?

He gazed and gazed as the clouds were giving way to the beauty of blue sky and the sun shone with victorious brilliance on the retreating darkness.

And then ..... and then ..... I heard Noah gasp and saw him fall to his knees. Noah saw something that no human eye had ever seen. With no smog or pollution to dim or obscure its grandeur, Noah saw the first rainbow in all its vivid, radiant perfection. (In all the pristine loveliness of the unfallen world, Adam had never seen a rainbow).

Then Noah heard the Voice that sounds through eternal ages, the Voice of Almighty God speaking words of overwhelming grace and a promise that such judgment would never be repeated.

Beautiful, wonderful, glorious rainbow; not only directing us to the Sovereign Creator but to a Cross where judgement beyond all judgment, judgment never to be repeated, was poured out on the sinless Saviour Who took our sins and judgment upon Himself.

Therefore, now we are enfolded in all the colours of God's love.

Rainbow in the sky, rainbow captivating my heart, thank you for the richness you bring.

With love and prayers,
