Many of us, (would I be too far off in saying most of us?) have an empty, aching abyss deep in that secret, lonely, inner place. Something we could never speak of to anyone, and maybe, having tried to bury or smother it for so long, foolishly don't even open it up to the Lord.
I love the Amplifed Bible and so many of Isaiah's words penetrate the shadowy, hurting places of the heart.
He tells us (Isaiah 49:10) that misleading mirages will not satisfy the longings. We know from (Isaiah 50:4-5) that it is God Who opens and instructs the ear, and then teaches the tongue -- SO -- those who are taught by God know just what to say to fit the need of others, when they encounter suffering people.
We can talk openly and fully to JESUS about that desolate island within, the disappointment of what might have been but never will be, the expectations never fulfilled, (all various forms of death, are they not?)
We can ask Him to cleanse the sin part and heal the wounded part. We can ask Him to show up the misleading mirages for what they really are.
Then, we can listen. Listen, as He pours in the healing balm, soothing all the damaged parts. Listen, as He instructs our ears in loving wisdom and enlightenment. Listen, as He imparts a willingness to die to everything that doesn't have its source in Him; including those "longed-for things" which, after all, may be misleading mirages.
Listen, as the desires of our hearts become God-given desires.
Listen, as He cleanses, heals, makes new and floods the restored and yielded places with the Resurrection Life of Jesus Christ.
(Isaiah 50:10) Who among you obeys the Lord yet walks in darkness and deep trouble and has no shining splendour in his heart? Let him trust and be confident in the Name of the Lord and let him lean upon and be supported by His God.
When we take the time to allow God to open our ears and they are full of His instruction, gratitude will replace disappointment, and our tongues will be full of His wisdom and love.
